Add a way to create events on the forum and display them in the user's timezone

1. Nikola,

Hello,
this was a suggestion I've had in mind for quite a while, but I am also not particularly sure about the best way to implement it. Nevertheless, I think the idea has potential, so I decided to give it a try.

Often, on the forum, when organizing a tournament, we have to deal with the different timezones, and potentially risk giving the incorrect time (especially when daylight saving time changes occur or don't occur depending on the area).

However, the Playroom already lets each user configure their timezone. In the past, it was said that the amount of users who utilize this feature isn't very large, but I'm thinking that creating a useful reason to configure your timezone might actually be a way to change that.

On the forum, there could be a way when creating a topic to add an event. The event can have a title, a description, and a date and time. This last possibility is particularly interesting, because the way I ideally imagined it is that I would enter my date and time according to the timezone I have configured, and then, when this event is displayed for other users, the time is converted to their timezone automatically.
Because of the point raised above, there could be a small disclaimer below the time displayed to mention that you should configure your timezone in the account settings, linking to the appropriate page.

This could also be taken a step further, allowing you to subscribe to that event and be notified via the client when it is about to start, as well as allowing the event creator to see a list of subscribers, but even just the first part of the suggestion would already be quite helpful.

I would like to hear your thoughts/ideas on whether this seems useful or if there are any additional items you would like to add.

Thanks.

2. gfriha,

The tournaments in the Spanish forum are a bit different. They are continuous. Organizators tell you that you have x days to play. Maybe the date that they add could be the date of ending the period of time? But i think that is a great idea and that people who reads the forum often, probably use the setting of the timezone, and if not, they would decide to change it

3. Aminiel,

Hello,

About 3% of users have set a timezone, and it goes up to 14% if we consider only those who have posted at least once on the forum. So it's indeed quite low.

However, without talking specifically about the timezone problem, I think that the possibility to attach an event to a post could be interesting for organizers, possibly to help them manage subscriptions.

I have already have had some vague ideas about tools for tournament organizers like this, but nothing more than that. So the discussion is now open: Should we stay simple and just have a description and start/end date/time ? Should we be able to manage registrations ? wait list ? Or should we go as far as random matchmaking, generating classements, or having a way to evaluate the trustiness of a player ?
All opinions about what you think could be useful, or totally useless are welcome. Even if I'm probably never going to go as far as the most complicated ones.

IN any case, don't expect anything in the first quarter of 2025, even the simplest form where you could just give a description and dates.
Ih think There are more important things to be done before, such as a client update.

4. Athlon,

i think we can add support a little at a time, so first we just have an event subject, organizers, and the starting time, and then we can move into random matchmaking and full on registration at a later time.

5. Nikola,

Hello,
I agree with the last post.

Everything you mentioned sounds very nice, and I would definitely be more than happy to see it implemented depending on your time and possibilities and provide feedback as usual, but it's probably better to start with the basics first.

About 3% of users have set a timezone, and it goes up to 14% if we consider only those who have posted at least once on the forum. So it's indeed quite low.

Maybe you already did this, but if not, this number can probably go even higher if you filter it to remove any accounts which haven't connected since the 15th of November of 2017. That's when the feature was implemented, so if you haven't been active after that time, you can't set your timezone.

Anyway, the real way to increase this is by implementing all account settings into the client itself. If you don't need to use the website to do about 90 percent of things on the Playroom, it just means that you aren't likely to discover this feature by accident, you just visit the site when you need to do something specific.
Of course, I perfectly understand your logic that this isn't something you need to change every day, although it does hurt the discoverability of these features.

That, or auto detection are the best ways to solve that, although auto detection only solves the timezones problem, still easily I would put the question of "How do I change my nickname?" on the list of top 10 most asked questions.
